Who is Oamaru
Oamaru is a little coastal town on the east coast of the South Island. It is surrounded by lakes and mountains that are only a short drive away offering all year round enjoyment. With a small population it punches well above it size. It has traditionally relied on the agricultural industry but over the last few years it has turned a circle with outside businesses moving in and setting up because of the affordability.
If you had asked me 10 years ago where Oamaru was heading I would have to be honest and say that it was turning into a retirement village. But with some amazing foresight by a group of people Oamaru came back to life again. We are a diverse lot and in a funny way we were able to harness our diversity and become the interesting little town that we are today, which in turn has brought a lot of growth, especially tourism. Tourism has now become a very important part of our make up, and is going from strength to strength as people from all around the globe come to see what we have to offer.
Some of the attractions will see you going back in time and taken into the future.
One of our main attractions are the Penguins, you can't leave town without seeing them coming home each night after their day foraging at sea.
You may even want to go and see our very own Prehistoric World.
The Victorian precinct is one of our biggest attractions, a run down old part of town a few years ago that has now been brought back to life
We are also known as the Steampunk capital of the world and these attractions are well worth visiting.
But best of all there are cafes and restaurants around every corner, well just about, which I am sure you will enjoy.
